May is Lupus, Fibromyalgia and Mental Health Awareness Month. A great way to do raise awareness in your community for these conditions is by requesting for a proclamation from your city officials recognizing the Month of May as Lupus, Fibromyalgia or Mental Health Awareness month in your city.
A Proclamation is a ceremonial document, a public or official announcement issued by the City Council to commemorate a specific time period (day, week, or month) for the purpose of raising awareness about local efforts.
Whether you are a person living with Lupus, Fibromyalgia or Mental Health or a loved one of someone with these conditions or if you have an organization that raises awareness for these conditions, join us. Our friends at Support Fibromyalgia will be mapping out all of the proclamations received from all of you and identify all of the cities declaring May as Lupus, Fibromyalgia or Mental Health Awareness Month in your city.
Step 1: Call - Reach out to your local city office clerk. Introduce yourself as their “constituent” this term is used to let them know you are part of their community, and let them know you would like to raise awareness for “Lupus” (name condition) and would like to request for a proclamation declaring the month of May as “Lupus Awareness Month” and let them know why this is important to you. They will guide you through their specific process for your city and may ask you to provide a sample.
Step 2: Download and Email- Download the sample proclamation and send a follow up email to the local city office clerk. Make sure to add the name of your city in the areas indicating city, save and attach to the email. In the email please provide your contact information and make sure to follow up.
Step 3- Schedule – Usually the proclamations are presented during the city council meetings where we encourage you to invite others in the community to attend with you, however due to the Covid-19 pandemic they may mail the proclamation to you.
